Exhibition
The Baltic Border Tower is a unique place where the history
of the divided Germany can be experienced authentically.
Decide to climb up to the top of the tower with the view
over the wide horizon of the Baltic Sea which used to be
the border. Or learn more from a historically guided tour
with inspection of the tower about the techniques of the
border surveillance. In the future there will be as well
an enlightening exhibition around the tower, the "border
teaching trail".
By that visitors from all parts of the world, children
an young people, will be given the opportunity to experience
border history where it happened. Apart from the tower,
reports of witnesses of the time, of refugees and border
soldiers as well as original exhibits will help to find
information.
In 1990 the Baltic Border Tower was saved from demolition
by the Border Tower Society and by residents of Kühlungsborn
and it was maintained as a monument. At present and in
the future the tower is being restored step by step and
turned in to a meeting place. The Border Tower Society
is compiling local archives and is glad about every contribution
may it be information, documents or objects.
Restoration of a searchlight sponsored by
the company Detholff & Lange, Neubukow.
Many refugees started their escape in Kühlungsborn, managed
either to reach the West successfully, were picked up or
lost their lives. Their fates, but also the daily consequences
of the Baltic Sea border for the residents are placed in
the foreground of interest.
Newspaper article: „Two young men of the GDR
fled across the Baltic Sea to Schleswig-Holstein.Only the
boat was left behind on the beach“ The refugee Jörn W.
from Kühlungsborn fled 1987 starting from Pepelow . He
placed the original escape boat, a tiny rubber dinghy,
at the Society‘s disposal as an exhibit.
