Archives
The Border Tower Society is compiling archives
from documents, reports of witnesses of the time and original
exhibits. The archives are locally related. Of special
interest are historical reports which relate to the section
of Kühlungsborn. Escapees, former border soldiers and other
interested people have supported us so far. Here you can
get a general idea of our collection. |

Escape attempts
The BTS documented various
escape attempts from Kühlungsborn and contacted the escapees.
One of the best known was Peter Döbel who reached in 1969
the island of Fehmarn which is 40 km away by swimming for
25 hours. Jörn Wiek gave the Society his escape boat wiht
which in 1987 he had paddled up to Neustadt (BRD). With
rubber dinghies, air mattresses and even a self-constructed
submarine many escapees tried their luck. However most
of these attempts ended tragically, some of them with death.

"Stasi" files / indictments
Young Klaus Drafehn from Kühlungsborn
was caught and arrested in 1962 when he tried to escape.
His files (in the archives) tell about the trial. He spent
six months in jail for "escape from the Republic".
Not all border soldiers functioned like machines.
Many of them did their compulsory military service at the
border or got caught in the machinery of the "Stasi" by
carelessness like captain H. (Stasi-files in the gallery). |
Objects
Apart from the tower and the original
searchlight there are uniforms, border volunteer ID-cards,
medals, stamps, handbooks and photos in the archives. The
collection shall be completed in the way that the tower
will offer a lively visual focus of that time.

Border system in Kühlungsborn
For his chronicle the historian Dr.J.
did research as well in the border system of Kühlungsborn.
He assists the Society as scientific adviser. Especially
detailed, locally related analyses and stories give authentic
information about the border history of Kühlungsborn. Some
extracts from his book are available here
as pdf Download (only in German available). |
